Past Events

Our group has gathered for many delicious potluck dinners, discussed issues, interacted with interesting special guests — and raised money for Democratic candidates. Here are some of the events and speakers we have enjoyed.

On Sunday, June 27th we held a Potluck Reunion–our first in-person meeting since the beginning of the pandemic.  We hosted Iowa Democratic Party chair Ross Wilburn, who talked to us about the IDP plans for Democratic victories in upcoming elections.   A wonderful time was had by all!

Lonny Pulkrabek Fundraiser

for Iowa’s 73rd House District in 2020

May 2020

Potluck Insurgency teamed up with Flip It Iowa for this fundraiser for Lonny. After serving as Sheriff in Johnson County for fifteen years, Lonny is retiring and running against Republican incumbent Bobby Kaufmann in Iowa House District 73. Special guests Representative Eric Swalwell (CA District 15 and former Presidential candidate) and Iowa House Minority Leader Todd Prichard made a compelling case for electing Democrats to the Iowa House in 2020 and expressed their support of Lonny’s candidacy

This is an active campaign at lonnyforiowa.com — and they need funding to defeat Kaufmann.

Senatorial Candidates Forum

In April we held our first Zoom-based event. It was a forum with all of the candidates for US Senate primary in attendance. Over 100 people attended the event, and hundreds more watched it on Youtube!

Andrea Phillips Fundraiser

for Iowa’s 37th House District in 2020

November 2019

Potluck Insurgency teamed up with Flip It Iowa for this memorable Chocolate Extravaganza Fundraiser. Andrea is running for the Iowa House in IA HD 37 and eloquently desribed the qualities that brought her back to Iowa after a career as director of marketing for a multinational company –qualities that she now sees as being at risk.

This is an active campaign at andreaforiowa.com – and Andrea needs funding to help Democrats win the majority in the Iowa House in 2020.

Rita Hart

for Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District in 2020

October 2019

Rita Hart, a Charles City native, fielded questions about her candidacy and policies during our house party. The lifelong Iowan farmer and educator was elected to the Iowa Senate in 2012 and then reelected in 2014 despite the GOP sweep across the state.

This is an active campaign at ritahart.com — and a tough race to retain this Democratic seat in Congress. Potluck Insurgency is hosting a virtual fundraiser for Rita in June 2020.

Jay Inslee

ran in the 2020 Presidential Primary

July 2019

The Governor of Washington, Jay Inslee, joined the Potluck Insurgency for a discussion on climate change and the environment. Inslee fielded questions about his “Evergreen Economy Plan” and in depth climate change policy.

Andrew Yang

ran in the 2020 Presidential Primary

March 2019

Andrew Yang, joined by Iowa State Senator Zach Wahls, shared his insights on the present and future impact of technologies on the American economy and society-and why he’s running for President. Yang also emphasized his plan for Universal Basic Income.

Julián Castro

ran in the 2020 Presidential Primary

January 2019

This was an exciting event which drew national press as Secretary Castro was just days away from announcing his Presidential bid. The former mayor of San Antonio and Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (2014-2017) is an ardent supporter of Medicare for All and described overhauling the US healthcare system as his number one priority if he were to become President.

Abby Finkenauer

Fundraiser

ran for Iowa’s 1st Congressional District

October 2018

Potluck Insurgency and Strong WoMen teamed up to help Abby Finkenauer in her 2018 race, which she won, for Iowa’s First District. Rep. Finkenauer served four years in the Iowa House before becoming one of the first two women in Iowa elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and the second youngest women ever elected to the U.S. House.

This is an active campaign in 2020 at abbyforiowa.com as she fights to retain this Democratic seat in Congress.

Eric Swalwell

Congressman for California’s 15th Congressional District

August 2018 and April 2019

Potluck Insurgency did two events with Rep. Swalwell – one coffee and doughnuts on a hot Sunday morning in July 2018 as he was weighing a bid for the Presidency, and one in April 2019 to celebrate the announcement of his candidacy. Born in Sac City, Iowa, Eric still has Iowa connections and we loved hosting him!

Jeff Merkley

current Senator for Oregon

June 2018

Senator Merkley met Potluck members when he was exploring a Presidential bid. At this house party, Senator Merkley highlighted his recent experiences on the Texas/Mexico border where he went to investigate and speak out against the inhumane treatment of immigrants and their children. A former supporter of Bernie Sanders for President, Senator Merkley also stressed the need for Democratic party unity as we try to win the Presidency, U.S. House and Senate, and down ballot races in 2020.

Tim Knutson
Fundraiser

ran for Iowa’s 21st House District

April 2018

Potluck Insurgency teamed up with Flip It Iowa for our first fundraiser. Tim ran a strong race in this majority Republican district where Obama won in 2012, but he lost to the Republican incumbent. A sad but not unusual story in Iowa. This event was hosted by Winan’s Chocolates and Coffees in Coralville.

Dave Loebsack

Congressman for Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District

December 2017

Dave Loebsack, the current House representative for Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District, fielded questions on Congressional legislation and highlighted his perspective on the “Tax Cuts and Job Creation” bill. Loebsack announced he would not seek reelection on April 12, 2019.

First Meeting

beginnings of Potluck Insurgency

January 2017

Our first potluck attracted more than 50 people who shared their dismay at the prospect of a Trump presidency and Republican majorities in the Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. Our focus that night was on what we could do to fight back on policies and begin to build toward Democrats winning in 2018 and 2020.
